Welcome to the California Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) website for the environmental investigation and cleanup of chemical (non-radioactive) contamination at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory.
DTSC's mission is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality, by regulating hazardous substances, conducting and overseeing cleanups, and developing and promoting pollution prevention.
This website is managed by DTSC, which is solely responsible for its contents. Through mutual agreement, The Boeing Company, NASA and DOE provide funding through a contract with CH2MHill for technical support on this website. |
The Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) is located 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles in southeastern Ventura County, near the crest of the Simi Hills at the Western border of the San Fernando Valley.
A former rocket engine test and nuclear research facility, the 2,849-acre field laboratory is currently the focus of a comprehensive environmental investigation and cleanup program, conducted by Boeing, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). DTSC is overseeing the environmental investigation, monitoring, and cleanup of chemical contamination at SSFL.
Investigation and cleanup activities at the site include air quality testing, soils investigations, groundwater cleanup and monitoring, hazardous materials and waste handling, and a radiation cleanup program.
| DTSC is fully committed to transparency and public involvement in our decision making process for investigation, cleanup, and permitting at SSFL. This website has been established in response to high public interest and concern regarding the SSFL facility. Please go to the public involvement link at the top of this page to see: public involvement activities, fact sheets, information repositories, how to be added to the mailing list, upcoming meetings, frequently asked questions, and community survey results. |
